Redesign Open Discussion

28.09.06 @ 11:20 am

As some of you may have read, I am changing some things around here. While it may not be the best decision, I have decided to start implementing some of these changes in real-time. I frankly do not particularly enjoy using this method for changing things on a website, but for various reasons, this seems to be the best way to go.

I will hopefully be discussing some additional ideas tomorrow or Monday with a couple colleagues of mine. Nonetheless, I would love to hear what you think about how the home page has changed, what you would like to see in this site, what you think it is lacking and what you absolutely hate about it.

I am going to keep this post up until the dust settles. Please do participate in your thoughts - all comments and critiques are welcome.

Update 1

I have successfully turned this blog into a complete mess for the time being. So, yes, I am fully aware that this site is messy and I will be chipping away at it throughout the week. Nonetheless, I had a great conversation with some colleagues who brought up some great thoughts on how to improve the site to meet some of my goals. Those changes will be rolled out throughout the week.

On the bright side, there seems to be a relatively solid drop in my bounce rate already. Considering the fact that my site is in shambles, this frankly surprises me. I am hoping that by the end of the rehaul, I will notice a strong 15% drop in bounces. I’ll keep that statistic updated throughout the month.

Update 2

I just noticed that the home page had been hijacked by my old Movable Type implementation that decides to write a new index.html file every now and then… Honestly, how appropriate and well-timed.

Update 3

The site is still a mess, but things are starting to come together. I have been getting some absolutely great comments from folks on their thoughts on how the changes are moving. By all means, leave your thoughts as well. As I have continued to point out, the numbers are coming in and are very encouraging. I will be doing a write-up later on about it. Until then, I still have many pages that are broken due to the changes to the template. After blatant breaks in the site are addressed, I am going to start adding features and toning down some of the ones I have already implemented.

Update 4

Another day, another round of changes. I have yet the implement them, but I am starting to get an idea in my head of a nice common ground between the visual, functional and experiential design direction I want to head towards. I have also come up with an idea that I think is going to dramatically increase user participation and the overall cool-factor of this site. Stay tuned.

Update 5

Domestic issues have taken center stage for the last two days. We had a very good discussion with Kellie about some design ideas as well as larger ideas about the blog. I have since then come up with some other facets of the template which will be changing in the next couple days. In addition, that idea I spoke of in the last update is becoming larger and more ambitious by the day.

Update 6

The further I get myself into this rehaul, the bigger a hole I seem to be digging. Still, things are progressing nicely in concept at least. I have a whole new slew of issues I need to fix, but I am going to continue to press ahead until I reach a few goals. As you may have noticed, the header has two new slots, one of which contains some cryptic information. Both areas are there for very specific reasons and will have very specific purposes. My wife and I had a very long brainstorm about how this new idea would work and while in some respects it has become less ambitious, it has become much more feasible. This may be one of the few updates this week as work is going to be ramping up. Still, I will be attempting to push some more ideas out onto the site soon.

Update 7

Next to nothing was accomplished this weekend as work has been downright all-consuming. I have a lot in the queue, and I am putting a lot of consideration into the aspect of timing. The header is moving, albeit slowly, in a different direction and the navigation is next on the list. I feel somewhat disapointed that so much time has been wasted on relatively superficial facets of the website considering the fact that there are some real interesting changes that I feel will impact this site much more. However, if timing is critical for anything, it will be for that. So please, be patient. I can assure you this is bothering me more than anyone. :)

Update 8

The updates continue… The header changed dramatically - it is still going to evolve a bit more, but this is the general direction I will be going in. I have held up on putting the fifth navigation item up because I still have some planning and implementing that I need to do. Many facets of the site still need minor tweaks if not major fixes, but at least forward motion is still being made. Visually, there are also a couple facets that need to be injected here and there. Still, I think the major change from this site rehaul will not be visual. More updates this weekend.

Update 9

Things continue to progress forward slowly. Expect some more changes this weekend. As you can see, there is something a little out of the ordinary at the top of the page now. I will begin to explain what is going on in further detail very soon., , , , ,

    My word… it’s 3 column!
Nah, I like it. There are several elements I dont think too much of but generally its not bad. First bad point; not enough padding - the text just goes too close to the edge of my browser for my liking. Second point; You’ve got a layout perfect for fluid here, why not make it fluid instead of keeping it fixed?

Other than that I like it.

  2. Yeah, that’s a very good point. It is quite tight on a 1024×768 screen so I most likely will have to adopt some sort of fluid-width layout. After I nail down the structure, I can then begin to work out more nuts-and-bolts implementations. Any good methods for fluid layouts? I do not have as much experience in that sort of implemenation as I should…

Amazingly however, the bounce rate for pages dropped dramatically just in one day. Of course, this could no doubt be a statistical anomaly, but the optomisitic side of myself is very encouraged. Really, I am just getting started, this whole design rehaul is going to take some time. Still, it’s good to get some positive statistical feedback early on.

“statistical anomaly” - I’m gonna have to start using that more often in conversation… make myself appear intelegent ;)

Not a huge amount I can say about liquid layout. There’s a really good gallery specifically showcasing liquid layouts only, but alas I cant remember the URL. If I remember anything Ill let you know.

  4. I think I’m going to hold off on the liquid layout until everything else is nailed down and solid. I just feel there’s so much else to do before I tackle that… Nonetheless, I will definitely pop that feature in eventually. Thanks man.

Wow. This is a lot ot take in! But I love how ambitious you are being by taking risks, even though it has drastically altered your layout.

I wanted to contribute by saying that I REALLY like all the new features in the right hand column of each page, especially the ‘most recent comments’ and ‘recent trackbacks.’ Also, the ‘Points of Interest’ section on this page. It satisfies the voyeur/nosy-ness in me…

Also, (not to add more requests on your already busy plate) I would love to see you incorporate more images (as well as related articles) into your site to entice the print designers, photographers, and visual artists out there. I always loved the idea that your site was not ONLY for web designers/developers, but also for photography enthusiasts, graphic designers, and artists. I think you should emphasize that more to be more inclusive to all creative people out there. It seems like a lot of the blogs out there pigeon hole themselves to one genre or field…

  6. Thanks for the feedback Kellie. :)

Man, that’s such a good point about the multiple audiences that come to this site. The photos will definitely go back on the front page after I have a better way of displaying them. I also want to start thinking about some sort of visualization for each link group in the third column. It can’t take up too much space but still needs to be visually interesting while displaying pertinent information. While that may be a challenge, I think things like that will greatly add to the site as a whole.

Expect more changes tonight - slow but steady progress awaits.

I will be checking back often during this week.
I would love to know what your amazing sources at Paradyme had to say about your site design.

Also, I had a random and off the wall idea… Since your typefaces seem to be the most popular reason to visit your site, perhaps you could consider some kind of user participation where you encourage people who downloaded the typefaces to send back screen shots or jpegs of how they incorporated them into a website/print piece. You can then post them online and link to that individual’s site. Just an idea there. I’ve seen this type of user interaction on a few creative sites (design, t-shirt company, and social network) and its worked out very well for them…

  8. Yeah, very good point. I have been meaning to add this sort of viral participation for a while in various different areas of the site. This really should have been something I did when the icons and fonts first came out. Sadly, I missed a very good opportunity. Still, I am going to do something like this after the rehaul and will begin to make this a standard when I partake on new projects.

First of all: nice move to do this redesign live including commentary from readers. To be honest I can’t remember the way your homepage looked like before (do you have a pre-screenshot?) because I most often arrive at the article pages and after reading leave again (sorry :) ).

But I do want to make some suggestions/ideas. As it is now you have the related posts list in the top of the sidebar. Is it an idea to place them below the article. Like: “More on this subject: list of a few selected links”. I guess a reader who is interested enough to read a complete post is probably interested in reading the related entries. Maybe you could also handpick those links to be sure they are really relevant.

Furthermore: not sure if you want to change the site visually. But if you do consider that, my suggestion might be to blend in some more personality. I do like the current design. It’s a great grid and very nice simplistic. However, I do miss a bit of a personal, friendly feeling. Maybe it’s also the big bright red header with the big icon which looks a bit like a big street sign. I mean, it is a personal blog/site isn’t it? Not sure if I can explain it well. But if you look at sites like Veerle’s or Hicksdesign, they have something softer, friendlier about them. Well, hope you understand. Just an idea.

Lastly, maybe it’s a big part of your “brand”, but I do think the big red area distracts a bit from the content. If I scroll down a bit so that the header is hidden somewhat, the content items get a lot more focus. For me, as I guess for many, my time is limited. So even if there might be lots of interesting articles in the lists of items, if I can’t find them quickly by scanning the page I won’t find them. So anything that helps to focus on the content could be helpful.

Ok, good luck and looking forward to see the progress.

    Hey PJ,

I think the changes you’re making are shaping up nicely, and I’m sure you’re learning a lot through it. I have been as well. It’s great to see the process. In my opinion, I think the best improvement has been on the “most active” and “browse” sections.. I’m interested to see what the stats say there.

One thing that I might re-visit is the horizontal main navigation. I’m a big fan/advocate of it and definitely backed it on this site, but in implementation, it occurs to me that it seems too separated from the page.. almost losing focus since the banner breaks the header from the main content. Have there been any better click-throughs there? Also, don’t forget to show state :) Currently the main nav doesn’t show where I am…

    Loving this.. and great work!

  12. Matthijs - Good points all around. Here’s a screenshot to jog the memory…

    screenshot

I actually really liked this layout for various reasons. Additionally, I’m still not completely sold on what I have right now. The only dilemma is, it seems be be working… Very well. So now I have to consider how I take the facets of what I liked and fit it within the confines of a design that will lower the site’s bounce rate. I still have yet to come across that, but I feel that’s due to my lack of creative thinking at this point.

I had the ‘related posts’ on the bottom of my articles before, but they just didn’t seem to get any clicks. My thought is, I need to cater to the people that both like and dislike the post in question. Having it up at the top gives them an exit option to another page within the site. Actually, the numbers are already quite astonishing. More later on that.

Visually, I think I am going to stick to this method - I may even try to go more minimalist. I have begun to notice how the branding of this site is working. I see links coming in from other posts refering to this site as the ‘red site’ or one of those ‘minimal sites’. Absolutely no offense meant, but I’m not a big fan of overly decorated sites - but your point rings true. I need to find a way to inject personality while still maintaining this brand that seems to be gaining traction. I have begun some rudimentary attempts to add some personality, expect more in the coming weeks.

I do agree that the red can be distracting. I need to find a way to counter that while still maintaining the identity. In my opinion, all the folks that continually redesign or refresh (or whatever you want to call it) their sites are doing severe detrimental damage to their brand. I will continue to try to improve this site’s structure, form and layout - but the identity stays and will always be a heavy part of the site.

Great thoughts, I really appreciate the thoughts.

Sugar - Luckily, I’m not too much of a gamer. I say that b/c I tend to have a bit of a compulsive attitude towards things. I have a feeling that I would be a bearded unemployed hermit if I even thought of installing WoW on my laptop. ;)

Kimmy - Seriously, the numbers are astonishing. I will be doing a write-up later on going into the details. Frankly, I’m surprised at how immediate and dramatic the results were…

As for the top navigation, I think you’re right and I’m going to see if there’s a better way of going about it. One problem is, I’m thinking of adding a couple new items, so that may up the challenge a bit. Also, very good point about the state of the link. It’s funny how I can so thoroughly miss the fundamentals - great catch!

Thanks so much for the feedback!

PJ, thanks for the screenshot. Now I remember. And I’m glad my comments are received well. You are spot on with what you say about the branding. That is very important. I wouldn’t suggest to change a lot. I like minimalistic as well. (as you can see my own site has been inspired by sites from people like Khoi, Shauninman and you. it’s the first version, so still a lot of work to do)

You are right that you shouldn’t over-decorate your site with some big flowery imagery or something :) (of course you also wouldn’t want John chasing you)

Your experience with the related posts are interesting. The thing about the ‘exit option’ sounds reasonable.

“Show some comment love…” Damn, right I will! :-D

Once again, I apologize for not being able to fully immerse myself in ‘web talk.’ This suggestion, once again is going to come from a lowly print designer so bear with me, my friend. ;-)

I immediately noticed that change you implemented in the red comment bar with the copy + icons. Although I am not sure about the proportions of the text + icons, I really like that personal touch and feel. Along with more images and viral features, you could enhance your layout with random witty statements here and there without suffering from the “over decorating” disease. For example…to minimally dress up something as simple as that red comment bar like you did goes a longgggg way and definitely adds some style. I recall a certain current web comp (ha ha, pun INTENDED) where you added your own one-liners in the design. It made me laugh my head off. (One comment talked about Ajax, remember?) My suggestions here were also inspired by Matthijs’ earlier thoughts: “…my suggestion might be to blend in some more personality. I do like the current design. It’s a great grid and very nice simplistic. However, I do miss a bit of a personal, friendly feeling.”

I agree! Don’t go with the floral fluffy stuff, use a limited amount of icons, photography, AND clever copy. I believe you have a real gift of wit and writing clever lines that catch peoples’ attention, makes an impact, or instigates a chuckle. Not to mention that considering the use of copy as a design element gives you an excuse to play around with typography. ;-)

  15. Matthijs - It’s funny that you bring up Khoi because he has gone a long way to have his site known as the black and white site. That is as amazing as it is priceless.

After checking out your site, I really like the format of your portfolio. Simple and obvious while still being integrated within your site. About 30% of my click-throughs go to my portfolio which inevitably ends their interaction with the site as it is a dead-end. At this point, I really think the portfolio is the largest blemish on the site which is highly unfortunate as it’s my damned portfolio.

Also, you have to go with what you feel comfortable. I’m not a decorator and I never will be. To go in that direction would be a suicide mission as I can guarantee that I’d fail in execution.

Kellie - Lowly print designer? You have to be kidding me! ;)

I agree with your comments about the ‘comment love’ needing some visual work - it was one of those “get it up now, because if I don’t do it, I’ll forget” jobs. I’m really going to devote an entire slot of time for injecting personality in a way that I think works for this site and is consistent with who I am - that may actually be one of the hardest things to do out of this whole project.

I honestly feel that clever copy can be the most effective design. Ironically, people dismiss copywriting as not being a part of design while continually stating how our job is to communicate. Better to kern your own words, I say! :D

Honestly, we should have another chat about some possible directions. That would be a fun jam session.

Love the “show some comment love” comment box. Way cool. Looking now at the screenshot I do prefer the old one - it just looks more ballanced, but then again that could be:
    a) because Im used to the old one
    b) because the new design isnt finished.
Still, it’s progressing and im sure you’ve got a master plan in mind ;)

  17. Yeah Steve, I still prefer the old one as well to be honest. I’m just going to have to attempt to get this new design to have more of the old feel. But yes, the design is still progressing - I have a few more tricks up my sleeve as to how I can simplify things a tad while still providing more clickage for the masses.

Wow tons of feedback. Lots of comment love here. I’ve got some brilliance to share:

Launch a zine site. What better way to integrate more interactive features than a combo site: flash/html/css/xml/php/ whatever. make it mobile with ajax code!!
damn….straight up genious boy! and then when you launch you’ll have an already existing blog for your site. somerandomdawg.net haha j/p
seriously though large firm company structures are like this but they do it all wrong.

PJ, Ambitious with the tabs system. I LIKE the concept. It needs no explanation and the clicks are smooth and fast! Of course, I think you can tweak and push the visual design of it, but I know you are aware of that. Great start!

PJ-I know this is a serious redesign comment section, but these little contributions of humor are priceless. I really need to hear your thoughts on some of these quotations! I laughed my guts out thanks to our dear friend. Truly brilliant. ;-)

  22. Yousuf - If I had the time, I would love to do something more magazine-centric. Unfortunately, I am only one person and getting a solid article out once a week is difficult enough. I have been trying to add weekly content, but it still doesn’t have the same pull as a high-quality article. I think the idea of a magazine format is great, but it would have to be an entirely different blog as I am a little hestitant to open up this blog past one, maybe two people.

Nonetheless, I am very open to doing that at some point. I think I would enjoy that greatly… As for your comments about advertising in the other post, I am being very careful about how I approach this and the route that I have chosen to go is tasteful, ethical and does not sell out. We’ll chat about it over a coffee soon.

Kellie - Yeah, I think the tabs are going to help - as you’ve guessed, the visual details have not been addressed as yesterday we spent most of our time working on Leah’s blog. I’m going to make some more changes this weekend and see what you all think. The big idea is still getting put together behind the scenes.

That was a very productive and enjoyable evening. Until you implement these dramatic new changes, I’ll keep quiet with all of my commenting. :-P

I see what’s going on with the header. Good solution, I think. It definitely utilizes the space more efficiently. As much as negative space is good, that entire bar of red with the one random dude icon was taking up a lot of valuable real estate. Here’a an even more radical suggestion…how about making the width of those red bars/boxes a bit more narrow. I know it will probably not make a difference in terms of giving you more space to use, but aesthetically, I can see them being a tad bit more narrow and proportionately, the dude icon a slightly bit smaller. Sorry, I tend to nit pick a lot.

I love the teaser box. ‘Give, get, spread

  28. I’m hesitant to narrowing those two columns on the home page as the space for that content is already pretty tight. For better or for worse, my titles tend to be on the ridiculously long side and they need room to stretch. ;) Definitely worth a try, but I’m not sure how it will work out. Still, I think there’s a creative solution to fix this issue.

On other subjects, this idea we spoke of has grown considerably since we last talked. I’ll fill you in later on.

  32. Unfortunately Steve, all sorts of areas of the site are at midpoints of being changed. Everything will come together, it’s just taking a much longer time than I expected for it to happen. This week has been one hell of a crazy one in terms of workload, so the time I’m able to spend on the redesign and actually writing new articles is minimal.

Next week should be a little better though. Expect things to be cleaned up significantly and a new article by midway through the week.

Hey PJ, I like it! I like that there are a number of recent posts listed.. and the ‘Browse Around’ and ‘Most Active’ heading really helps users understand what they can expect to find there. Yeah, everything seems to be falling in place. Good work! The one concern that I have is that the navigation is all the way to the right. In general it turns out that users find left-justified and right-justified navigations equally usable, with the top-justified edging out the former. You combine right-justified with top-justified, which is really neat, but keep in mind that not everyone keeps their navigator maximized. That means that even if you have a tiny portion of 800×600 users, the 1028×768 crowd still may be affected. Check your logs and see how big of a concern that may be.

Another thing that I would love your site to have is a page that justs lists all of your posts in chrono order. One step further may be to have a sortable list of posts. But I know that’s some serious coding. WP doesn’t have a plug-in for that, does it?
