Some Random Dude Is On a (Blog) Diet
2.08.07 @ 10:33 amAfter a relatively brief but substantiative discussion with Kellie and a lot of thinking on my own, I have decided to shake things up a bit. I made the decision to write in a format that allowed a more steady stream of content to come in on a daily basis. That format has unfortunately sucked me dry while arguably adding very little to the quality of content on this blog. In my opinion, this led to a much dumber Some Random Dude. Sure, it updated frequently, but rarely were the updated truly inspiring.
All that being said, I feel there is a lot to be said about weekly features, regimen and structure for a blog. The audience knows what to expect and the constant content keeps them continually engaged. However, as a one person show, the number of posts per week definitely has an indirect relationship on the number of serious articles per month. If I could keep this format while keeping quality up, I would not think twice about doing so. However, there are only 24 hours in a day.
So my desire for both quantity and quality has led me to try to find a middle ground. My goal is to post at least three times a week with one of those being a serious article. If I can post more than three times weekly, great - but the goal is three. If I cannot post a real article, I will most likely fill the area with additional small posts. The purpose of this shift is balance - both quantity and quality are important to readers, so I will try to do a little of both. The large article may come in the form of your regular article or a more vetted experiment or something altogether different. Quality and depth are the main focus.
So How Will This Be Accomplished?
It does not take very long to see a lot of content fat on this blog. I semi-purposely had a lot of overlap in content so to fit a daily update format. A perfect example of this is the Weekly Photograph. Since I spent a decent amount of time to create a photoblog, why duplicate the process? For me, this was the biggest no-brainer. Secondly, Designing Good and the Weekly Links are going to be combined into one big post. I definitely like some aspects of them being apart, but I think the reasons for combining them outweigh the reasons for keeping them as is. This may cause some extra work in the short term, but I truly feel it will be worth the long-term time savings.
With two less weekly features, I will have saved at least an hour a week. This does not sound like too much, but an extra hour in the day devoted to writing should make a significant difference. This all depends on a certain degree of discipline of course, but so does posting everyday. Sacrificing a couple posts may also keep me from burning out which, with all the other pulls on my life, is slowly becoming more evident.
What Do You Think?
Did you like the daily posts? Sad to see them go? I would love to get your thoughts on this and discuss the positives and negatives of this move. That being said, I am pretty firmly set that this change will occur. I hope my readers (all 3 of you) consider it a good move.amount of time, articles, blog, blog content, blogging, daily basis, duplicate, indirect relationship, one person, photoblog, quantity, quantity vs quality, regimen, steady stream writing
