Some Random (Pixel) Font

26.06.06 @ 9:16 am

I have had the deep desire to design my own font for quite some time. In fact, I still consider it to be one of the things on “the list” that I need to eventually do. While I cannot say that I have taken a full step towards that goal, perhaps I have taken a quarter of a step by creating my first pixel font. I obviously have no qualms with pixel design, but I do not hold pixel fonts even in the same remote level as traditional fonts. I can see Jan Tschichold, Paul Renner and Max Miedinger spinning in their graves at the mere mention that a pixel font would be put in the same sentence with traditional typographic design.

All that being said, I actually quite like my font (appropriately named SomeRandomFont). I consider it one microscopic step towards designing a real font someday. Unfortunately it is only in TrueType format at this point although I will be moving it to other formats in the near future. This font is free to consume and enjoy.

i am thrilled to see a new font out there! Good job.

  2. Yeah, like the world needs another pixel font. ;) Nonetheless, I’m glad to have been able to get this out. Perhaps there are a couple more pixel-font tricks in my hat…

I like the font, especially the capital letters. :)

  4. On the subject of pixel fonts, I found a very cool one by the name of Delight. Very well done.

I really enjoyed seeing the ‘Delight’ font being used on those beautiful orange cards. i hope to see this font implemented into actual print or web pieces! hopefully i will come across a cool project to use ’somerandomfont.’

  6. Yeah, Delight is a super-cool pixel font - nicer than somerandomfont in my honest opinion. Still, I will probably stick with my font for some future projects to see how it works out. I’ve noticed that this font seems to have some issues in Flash - it may just be on my machine. I guess we’ll see.

Nice font, P.J.! I like how you added some curviness to the characters, like with the capital E.

I am very pleased that you like the Delight-Font. Please notice: it’s for free, but the kerning is not yet perfect. Some letter don’t fit exactly together. But at the moment I don’t have the time to fix this problems. In the near future I will start a relaunch of Delight, including a Sans-Serif Version and a bold-cut.

Somerandomfont is very nice. I like the fusion-mix of upper-/lowecase letters.

  10. Thanks guys, I appreciate the positive feedback. I myself am looking forward to any new releases of Delight. :)

    Very retro, I think–80s–pacmanish.

Awesome, dude. I’ve always wanted to take some time to make my own font but never got around to it, perhaps this is just the inspiration I need. Good job man.

  13. I would highly suggest giving it a go Jon. It’s definitely worth the time.

  14. […] I am not personally too fond of most free fonts. Call me a type snob if you wish, but I just don’t think most of them carry the same quality as the classic fonts (my font included). That being said - for those who desire to pinch pennies (and other monetary pieces), this seems to be a good resource. […]

Hmmm… might have to use this in a project of mine: Pixelbox

  16. If you do, let me know and I’ll post it on this site. :)
