Every effort I make to find/create an alternative to Google ads just falls flat because Google Ads are so easy, and are pretty effective.

Interesting article PJ. I think creating a relationship between advertisers and their adverts, and your site can certainly be a good thing> However I think it can also work against you, in that people may begin to cotton on and see your site only as a way to generate revenue. This is perhaps a little bit extreme, but fundamentally you could begin to loose credibility with your audience.

Stimulating article. Great points on usage of banners. SO many banners have been used its sort of like reading the classified sometimes.

I do like your proposition on developing relationships/partnerships with advertisors. And i think it can only lead to gathering advertisers with similar interests.

HOWEVER. How this all plays out visually i have no clue. But I'm always interested in alternatives.

I agree with almost everything you are saying, but have a hard time letting this affect how I use advertisers on my sites. Every effort I make to find/create an alternative to Google ads just falls flat because Google Ads are so easy, and are pretty effective. I know that the traffic on my homepage is almost entirely regular readers, so I don't insult them by throwing ads at them. However, the traffic on my individual archive pages are almost entirely from Google (or other searche engines). It makes sense to use the power of Google to serve ads to these pages that would let me earn some money off the people that may or may not be really interested in the content of that page. On the other side of the ad, my wife has a business that relys heavily on purchasing Google adwords. It just works for both sides.

The other problem with having too close of a relationship with your advertisers is that you risk losing some of your credibility. To take your idea to an extreme, it might be better if no money changes hands at all so that it doesn't affect what you write for the site. I guess that wouldn't be advertising then, just a partnership. Hmmm.
