Love this photo…. Leaving a comment to see how I can help some charity, this is my first visit - how does it work, I will try digging a bit thru the site here to see if I can’t figure that out myself. Saw last months $$ for comments went to an environmental charity? Brilliant! With this photo, as well as the person who sent me here (@eMailOurMilitary) I’d like to see you do something for the troops!
just a suggestion, hope I didn’t overstep on my first visit!

Hey Hawksdomain - thanks for the kind words all around.
The basic gist on Comment Love is very simple - you leave a comment that is relevant to the article (it can be as positive or negative as you’d like, it just needs to add to the discussion) and I will donate $0.50 to a worthwhile organization. Up until this point, it has been KQED and Carbonfund.org. I limit the donations to $50 a month. You can read more about the details here.
As for the suggestion, you’re not overstepping your bounds at all - I think it’s a great idea and I would love to give next month’s Comment Love to the troops. I’ll need some help though - could you give me some advice on a good organization to support the troops? The higher the percentage of donation that goes straight to the troops and their families, the better. On a personal note, I would prefer organizations that do not focus on providing additional arms for the soldiers - although I would be more than happy to support organizations that provide extra armor for troops. I hope this doesn’t rub anyone the wrong way, it just doesn’t feel right to me to add more guns to an environment that needs less of them.
If you’d like to talk more about this, just drop me a line.

How did you get the dramatic background? Is that truly just a depth of field effect or did you do some photoshop retouching?
Absolutely powerful image in such a simple, minimal composition.

The lens I used for this photo has its aperture wide open for this shot (f2.5). With the aperture that open, you get that nice, silky bokeh.
