Weekly Photograph - Pinwheel

I decided to use one more photo from our set we took in Mendocino. The town of Mendocino is quite interesting because there is as much of the town that is devoid of roads as there is with roads. Obviously, the area without roads proved to be much more interesting as a photographic subject. Out of the blue, we came across a pole with this bizarre pinwheel on top of it, spinning away. Much like the rest of the town of Mendocino, small unexpected scenes literally come out of nowhere. This shot is a perfect example of just that.
I definitely enjoy taking a scene and finding a unique way to capture it in order to (hopefully) breathe a whole new life into the subject. There are times, however, when I see something that is just begging to be captured exactly how it is. Anything I could do to it other than simply capturing its essence would do the subject a disservice. I unfortunately do not get to go on long photographic excursions as much as I would like to anymore. For that reason alone, I feel I really have to look for something to shoot rather than passively observing a scene for a long period of time taking in what comes. Sadly, this is mainly a lack of time. However, I have had those instances where something special just seems to pop out of nowhere. For whatever reason, this photograph and its sheer randomness gave me that feeling. Perhaps it is just me.

In every issue of the New Yorker magazine, there is a short story accompanied by a photograph that somehow relates to a theme, character, or incident in the story. This photograph looks like one of those images that precedes the story. Very peculiar and haunting. From my point of view, It is like you captured a moment in time from someone’s childhood.

Is there a colour version of this photograph, PJ? That sky looks mesmorising, almost scary - like a storms coming or something. Great shot mate!

I really like the photo in black and white. This photo is etched in my memory in color, so it is definately like seeing this image for the first time again in black and white.
I love the motion of the photo - yet, the inherent one dimensional element of the photo seems to create tension between the photographic object and the photograph itself. It is like the pinwheel is fighting to move beyond the confines of this rectangle-shaped container. Good shot.

I would love to see a comparison of the same image in its original state. It never ceases to amaze me how dramatically an image can change in mood or meaning when it loses or gains color.

Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate them and I’m sorry for the late response. I will see if I can get the color photo up later this week - the difference is much greater than you may think.
