Weekly Photograph - Zipper
9.01.07 @ 1:59 pmI got a new lens for our Canon digital camera and while it testing out I took this shot. I did not even think twice about it until I had a look at it that night.
I have frankly been very disappointed with the performance of our Canon digital camera with the kit lens. Honestly folks, do not buy any Canon digital with camera with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. It is not worth the time to take it out of the box. With this 50mm fixed lens, I finally feel like I can take a quality shot. I also finally feel like I can go out and shoot even if it is not noon on a completely sunny day. I am going to be doing a little writeup on my amateur attempt to compare the two lenses. Make no mistake, I still do not feel this Canon with even the L-Series 50mm lens could hang with my Nikon's 50mm lens and a roll of Velvia. Obviously, this is conjecture, but from what I have seen and read, my mind has not changed.
As for this photo, I am very happy with the crispness, contrast and saturation of color. Mind you, Flickr always seems to ruin the color of the photos I upload - something that was very crucial for this shot. In actuality, the tones of the reds and the backdrop are much warmer. Still, I am quite happy with it.

Just out of sheer curiosity - why a zipper?

That image is actually of a zipper for plastic drape. I loved the strong reds and blacks on the otherwise light background. Of course, the compression of the photo to JPG ruined it…
