Photo Assignment - Emotion
8.11.06 @ 9:47 pmMy good friend Dennis thought up the very interesting idea of having a photographic assignment every month. Each assignment has a particular theme - participants then take photos related to that theme and then we all come together to critique each other’s work. Our first assignment was ‘Emotion’ and the collection of photos was quite diverse.
The main purpose of this project is to discuss and learn from each other. We would also like to hear and learn from people outside of this project - all (constructive) opinions are welcome. We look forward to hearing from you.

Dennis, Marisol, and Bryan are obviously very comfortable with photographing people. I am especially envious of their skills to do this! (I feel awkward taking pictures of strangers.) The end results look effortless. Titles are not necessary for ‘Wonder’ and ‘Happiness’ because the human expressions captured in those photographs speak for themselves. Exquisite and very original images. The girl with her dog is timeless…the composition/cropping is gorgeous and the light captured in the dog’s eyes really bring the photograph to life. And I like the sponteneity and humor in Bryan’s untitled photograph. I love how the most random, unexpected moments can result in something truly original.
PJ and Leah’s more distant photographs are equally intriguing because it combines humans AND landscapes to convey the emotion. I think these types of images take on a narrative quality, as if a story was being told from afar. While closeup images of human emotions are powerful, I do enjoy the sense of detachment and distance from the subject matters at times. PJ’s two images are heartbreaking studies of society’s outcasts. The choice of using black and white film really enhances the sense of loneliness. On the other hand, Leah’s images uses color successfully to convey the emotions in her photographs. There is something whimsical and upbeat about the woman, her pink shoes, and the vibrant flower stand. On the other hand, the muted palette in ‘Old Woman’ makes me feel nostalgia, especially since the woman seems lost in thought. It is truly a solitary moment in time.
I sincerely look forward to seeing more photography projects in the near future. Excellent job, everyone. I love all of these examples of ‘Emotions.’

I think what has come out was something really special. Everyone brought something to the table and these shots were beautiful. I am happy to say that we will definitely be getting at least half a dozen possible new contributers so we can benefite from even more perspectives.
Because I think it’ll be hard to leave such large comments on our gracious hosts site, I think we should have our own flickr accounts and then use them to write our comments for each other. We can use this for general comments and the flickr for technical and artistic critique.
I see a great amount of potential for this to be a great help to bettering our photography. Also, I’m hoping one day we can do nudes and then I can do a self portrait in the mirror. Just kidding..that is gross.
Great job everyone! I’ll be writing my comments on each picture in flickr.
