A New Bundle of Joy Is On Its Way

14.04.06 @ 1:00 pm

You’ve heard me right. My wife and I found out four days ago that we will be expecting a new addition to the family soon. This is our first time with something like this and we’re eagerly expecting to have our lives be very different from this point on. I’m a little hesitant in telling everyone the news before the delivery as you never know what can happen between now and then, but we’re so excited that I had to write about it. We have some images and while it is not in our arms yet, we already are in love.

Wait, what were you expecting? A baby?

Yes, we have purchased a Rolleicord II (Type 1). It’s a medium format camera that was manufactured around 70 years ago. My wife and I have never shot with medium format and I am as giddy as someone can be to start playing with it. I’m assuming that we are going to have to get some cleaning and possibly mechanical work done to it. In addition, we’re going to need to get a handheld exposure meter as it does not have its own light meter. Nonetheless, you cannot beat a shot exposed on 120mm film. Wow, our family just got much more exciting. :)

UPDATE: Well, it looks like it is off to the doctor for some reconstructive surgery., , , ,

pj. i almost passed out for a second….

that camera is truly an intriguing looking thing. i would love to try it out for myself, if you don’t mind.

  2. Oh, after reading it again, I guess I could see how people could mistake that for a child. My bad. ;)

Yeah, we picked up this thing for a song on eBay. It’s a little beat up on the outside, but the seller said that it’s is very good working order. For the price, it’s worth the chance.

If it wasn’t for the computer gods crashing my browser at the last second, we would have been the proud parents of an absolutely gorgeous Nikon rangefinder as well. I’m actually really glad the browser crashed as we don’t need another camera at this point. Sometimes I let camera lust get in the way of common sense.

Yes, yes, but what are you going to name it?

I wish you both a lifetime of beautiful memories–captured in stunning detail, no doubt. :)

Pat G.! let’s have a naming contest. best and most original names win a prize. here are my very unique and creative ideas:

boy: p.j. j.r (damn, look at those acronyms grow)
    girl: leah j.r.

    The name shall be:
    Rollei Pollei!

    (Exclamation point optional).

Kellie, you know I hate acronyms… WTF!?!? MF!!!

Stop insulting PJ’s name. It’s rude.

I am so excited to see what kind of pictures will come out this beauty. We’ve been experimenting (sadly with photoshop) on making the quality of photographs look nostalgic, dated, and slightly imperfect. it’s the closest thing that i have to owning an old camera.

  9. LOL! (just for you Pat) ;)

You’re right, a name is definitely appropriate. I find perverse pleasure in a name with two acornyms - hell, we could make an acronym OUT of the acronyms (ironically, that would turn P.J. Jr. into P.J.). Gotta love nested acronyms.

And yeah, we’re definitely looking forward to the lo-fi quality that this camera will most likely produce. Both of you are free to use it at any time. As long as you call it by its name (which is to be determined).

  13. […] Our Baby is Back Home Tags: camera Photography rollei rolleicordThe doctor worked a miracle and our baby is good as new. Some fungus cleaning, shutter timing and a new mirror later, our Rolleicord is ready to take pictures. We are going to have to wait on our exposure meter to be delivered, but we have purchased our film and are looking forward to the photos this camera produces. Our Rolleicord has some battle scars, but it is still in beautiful condition. Have a look: Technorati Tags: camera, Photography, rollei, rolleicord […]

  14. […] For the last few months I have decided to take a step back and begin working on fundamentals. One of the first things I did was begin taking the majority of my shots with black and white film. I noticed that color had too much of an impact on the success or failure of my photos. Composition, contrast, lighting and cropping, while important, seemed to be dropped down a notch whenever I shot with color. I knew that relying on color was such a one dimensional approach and it really limited what I would shoot and how I would go about shooting. I bought a boat-load of Fuji Neopan film and haven’t looked back. What is even better is our Rolleicord’s lens is calibrated only for black and white film which will prompt me to continue shooting sans color. […]

[…] Learning Photography All Over Again Tags: 120mm film, camera, film, medium format, medium format camera, Nikkormat, Photography, rollei rolleicordI finally got a chance to take some photos with our Rolleicord that we recently purchased. This little adventure has required quite a bit of commitment as we needed to purchase a handheld exposure meter as well as have the camera fixed and cleaned from head to toe. As you can imagine, your local corner-store does not carry 120mm film so we have to go to and stock up on film at specialty photography stores. Surprisingly, 120mm film is not too expensive, but I would assume that will change as film in general becomes more rare. […]

  16. […] I ended up with a Hasselblad 501cm. If you have been reading this blog for a while, you know this is not the first medium format camera (wiki) we have picked up. A while back, I found a Rolleicord Type 2 made in […]
