This Week’s Weekly Links of the Week - Week 12

3.08.06 @ 10:16 pm

Behold! Knee in awe of the abundance of links I generously present to you this week! Compared to last week’s meager offering, this is the motherload. I thought if there was any time to come up strong, it would be my first real week of regularity. I myself enjoyed all these links quite a bit - I hope you do as well.

Current Events

Josh is in jail and this is his mom - The Revolution Will Be Televised
Strange title, I do admit, but this definitely is a subject worth reading up on. Courts have placed Josh Wolf in jail for failing to hand over raw footage of a demonstration he filmed. Josh is withholding the video, sighting journalistic rights. There are heated opinions on each side of the spectrum and things are starting to get ugly.

As always, the intellectuals on both sides are flocking to comment:

What the f— kind of journalist doesn’t know the difference between “ensure” and “insure,” but, more seriously, f— you, Josh Wolf, turn over the tapes.

Ah yes, the eloquent art of debate…

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE LAND OF THE FREE,ITS BURIED UP TO ITS EYEBALLS IN BUS—! FREE JOSH NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO HIS PROPERTY EXCEPT HIM! WAKE UP AMERICA YOU IDIOTS YOUR TURNING INTO NATZI AMERICA! WAKE THE F— UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE BUSH IS A MURDERING BASTARD!

I could go on and on about the beauty of misspelled words, liberal use of profanity and the unbridled power of using all capitals - but I won’t.

Limbaugh’s Civilian talk - Crooks and Liars
Limbaugh = Bin Laden, Bin Laden = Limbaugh.
AT&T’s Whitacre: ‘Nobody Gets a Free Ride’ - Light Reading
Please get used to these links as I will continue to post Net Neutrality issues until this debacle is stopped. Please help stop telecoms from ruining the internet. Also, if you have signed petitions or written your Representative, please let us know in the comments. Google also has some helpful information about this subject.
Test for Network Neutrality - Boing Boing
From the article:

Dan Kaminsky, DNS hacker and rootkit infection sleuth, has devised a test for checking to see if your Internet connection is “neutral” — that is, whether your connection is being filtered, throttled, slowed down, or monkeyed with secretly by your ISP

Flippin’ rad. It will be interesting to see how people use this tool and how the telecoms will react…

RIAA forced to drop download case - bit-tech
Finally, what seems to be a win for the good guys. The RIAA has been carpet-bombing US citizens with lawsuits up to this point. Perhaps you would be willing to support the EFF in its fight against the RIAA…
The Daily Show gets Left Behind - Joystiq
Ah yes, good ol’ fashioned videogame violence - Christian style. Read more about this game here and here.
Global warming beer made from melting ice-caps - Boing Boing
Well, at least something cool is coming from a crappy situation… Not to deprive you from tons additional beer we should be expecting now, but have you bought your TerraPass yet?

Interesting idea although it seems to be very early on in its formation. It is definitely something to keep your eye on though. Via Monday By Noon

Photography

The links below were found in my search for advice on Canon lenses. As some of you may know, my wife and I recently made a new photographic purchase. Further down the road, we would like to get at least one better lens for the camera. Here were some helpful resources I found during my search.

Canon EOS Lens Reviews
A very detailed account of his experiences with different Canon lenses of all types. He tended to focus on variable focal length lenses for most of his reviews. Very detailed and well put together.
What lenses for my digital SLR (Canon)
Another great review of lenses - this one focusing more on fixed focal length lenses. We are actually more interested in fixed focal length lenses so I personally found this one more interesting than the article above.

An amazing chart of all the lenses Canon offers for their digital SLR line. All the information you would need plus more.

Nerdery & Tech

Tesla Motors
An electric sportscar - very cool to say the least. It is great to know that there is a $90,000 option for clean transportation. Now only if those geniuses could find a way to make a car the other 99% of the world could possibly use…

I have read up on this subject a couple times now and I continually think to myself that I need to do this. Unfortunately, that would involve getting off my lazy butt and doing it. Unfortunately, my lazy butt is currently writing about being too lazy to get off my lazy butt.

Why “Nice Guys” are often such LOSERS
To quote the article:

What’s wrong with Nice Guys? The biggest problem is that most Nice Guys ™ are hideously insecure. They are so anxious to be liked and loved that they do things for other people to gain acceptance and attention, rather than for the simply pleasure of giving. You never know if a Nice Guy really likes you for who you are, or if he has glommed onto you out of desperation because you actually paid some kind of attention to him.

Hmmm… Not sure what I think about this but an interesting read.

  3. I wish it were my full-time job Steve. :)

Honestly, it takes a lot of time and I’m considering how I might be able to speed up the process. Time is only going to get harder to come by and I need to start blogging smarter rather than longer.
