This Week’s Weekly Links of the Week - Week 5

18.06.06 @ 12:14 pm

Once again, I just made it in time. The last couple weeks have been very busy - I hope things begin to settle down soon. There are some extraordinary links this week, I hope you enjoy them.

I have been very bad about email and suggestions given to me about possible posts. I am hoping that this too will improve as things slow down.

Web Experiments & Tools

Webshot Screen Capturing - NathanM
A great desktop application web screenshot utility. It has tons of options for capturing an entire web page as an image.
Screen grab!
This extension is along the same lines with a few less options. Still, the ease of having this utility in Firefox makes it extremely useful.
CSS Ruler Tool - Airbag Industries
A very clever idea for those needing a measurement tool for putting together websites. Slap in an image and a few extra lines of CSS and you have yourselves a ruler. Very cool.
Multi Safari - Michel Forton Here
I have been waiting for something like this for quite some time. I have a flurry of browsers installed on my PC but I only have the latest version of Safari for Panther on my Mac. Now I can have any versions (before Tiger’s releases) on my Mac. Good stuff.
Sloppy - Richard Dallaway
I am currently working on a streaming video player in Flash. Flash unfortunately cannot seem to simulate different progressive downloading speeds for FLV playback. With this Java application, you can simulate any speed over the internet.
Fancy Checkboxes and Radio Buttons - Maratz
The default style of form elements can get to be a little boring. Here’s a way to add a little style (if you so desire) to them.
Objects in Photoshop DOM
I have been looking for something like this for almost a year. The Adobe Photoshop scripting documentation is amazingly bad. Considering how revolutionary this could be in how to use Adobe products, you would think they would help the community more. Nonetheless, this tool does just that. Thanks for nothing Adobe and thanks a ton phrogz.net
Box Grid - Dan Phiffer
A very interesting web-based calendaring system. Definitely worth a good look.

Photography

$11 Super Wide Angle Digital Camera - Instructables
Very, very clever.
How To Make Digital Photos Look Like Lomo Photography - Digital Photography School
Sort of defeats the purpose, does it not? Honestly, if you want lomo-ish photos, shoot with a Holga. It will be return much more genuine and original results.

Typography

Indie Fonts Sale - P22 type foundry
A really nice collection of fonts for a really nice price. If you have $10 to drop, I highly suggest putting it towards a few extra fonts.

Noteworthy Sites

PJ Otro
An amazing site that really pushes what can be done with Flash. The dude isn’t a bad dancer either. Double kudos!
Tim Muller
Brother of Tom Muller, Tim has a great portfolio spanning a wide range of mediums.
Design Observer Redesigns
I have been wondering when this was going to happen for quite some time. Well done.
Patrick O’Brien Foundation
The filmmaker Patrick O’Brien was diagnosed with ALS two years ago at the age of 30. Patrick has set up a foundation to and I highly suggest that you donate as much you can.
The Fog of War
I just watched this documentary for the second time and I once again realized how powerful a documentary it is and how much it related to these current times. I highly suggest watching it.

Noteworthy Articles

Solar Powered Air Conditioning Just Makes Sense - Treehugger
It sure does.
What users hate most about Web sites - Infoworld
Good article and a semi-wakeup call for Flash developers. However, you know what else users hate about most websites? Annoying pop-up ads when entering a website. Funny that infoworld does not heed some of its own advice…
Parenting 101, George W. style
A great article by Kellie Okai about the potential problems of policing morality over the airwaves. Great read.
Best Buildings of the Year - Business Week
If you are a fan of architecture, this is for you. I find it strange that Business Week of all publications ran this, but I’ll take it however I can.
