This Week’s Weekly Links of the Week - Week 7
29.06.06 @ 9:11 pm
A motherload of links this week. I truly hope you enjoy this week’s links because it took me an extraordinary amount of time to collect them and put the list together. There are a lot of articles this week so get your reading glasses ready. Are there any specific subjects that you would like addressed in the future? Give me a holla’.
Have fun consuming!
Design
- On-screen design: US v. Europe - Cameron Moll
- Nothing new here in the game of design - Europe: 500, U.S.: 0
- Creativity is a discipline of learning - Ideas on Ideas
- If you have not run across this blog yet, I highly suggest doing so. A constant stream of great thoughts and (you guessed it) ideas. This article is just another great one to add to his collection.
- The MySpace Problem - Vitamin
- Another very good article on the illusion that design does not matter. Just wait until a better MySpace comes along - people will be jumping off MySpace like it was the Titanic.
- The AIGA and Web Design - Subtraction
- It is no secret that the AIGA still does not quite get this whole internet thing. I sometimes believe that some of the senior fellows at the AIGA are still hoping that the web is just a passing fad. Hopefully that will eventually change.
- Visualization and Discovery - Emily Chang
- A great article discussing some of the hot visualization pieces on the web. A very good read.
- Only Free Fonts Site
- I am not personally too fond of most free fonts. Call me a type snob if you wish, but I just don’t think most of them carry the same quality as the classic fonts (my font included). That being said - for those who desire to pinch pennies (and other monetary pieces), this seems to be a good resource.
Photography
- Lightning Photography
- Yeah, only one photography link this week. The title speaks for itself.
WebDev
- Where Visual Design Meets Usability - An Interview with Luke Wroblewski, Part I - User Interface Experience
- If you are a UE geek, you’ll enjoy this article. Keep your eye out for Part II.
- Player 9 Released - This changes everything! - On Flex
- Considering Flash is what brings home the bacon for myself, I cannot believe that I missed the release of Flash Player 9. Macro… er… Adobe seems to be on the cusp of great things.
- Relay
- Yet another AJAX tool worthy of linking to. Have a look.
- Stop coding right now! - Dustin Diaz
-
From Dustin:
This is just a friendly reminder to not forget that writing code should have a purpose. Too often as developers and engineers we get caught up in making things superfluous in our code that we lose site of the actual problems we’re trying to solve.
Thank you.
- How to Create Flick Animations with CSS - Webreference.com
- At first I thought this was quite gimmicky but it seems as though it could be quite useful. Bye bye gif animations.
- Invaluable Wordpress Plugins - Ping Mag
- If no one else finds this useful, at least I will. I feel this blog is far from complete in its design. Many of these plugins will soon be added to Some Random Dude.
- Sure, Im a webdesigner! I have Dreamweaver! - Nate’s Blog
- Obvious but poignant. The tool does not make the artisan.
- Flex.org
- I personally am still on the fence over Flex, but with the new release of Flex 2 there seems to be quite a bit of hype growing. I will be looking through this in detail in the next few days.
Noteworthy Sites
- Snarkmarket
- A very well-written and blog by many clever folks. Subscribe and do not look back.
- CSS Galleries
- Smart idea - aggregate the overwhelming plethora of CSS gallery sites into one site. Easy, convenient, cool.
- Inspiration King
- On the topic of CSS gallery sites - you can add one more to the “overwhelming plethora”.
- The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci — Complete by Leonardo da Vinci - Gutenberg.org
- If there is anyone in the history of mankind who should have their notebook archived, it is Leonardo Da Vinci. Inspirational to say the least.
- Silent London - Simon Elvins
- A simply beautiful visualization on noise levels in London. Brilliant.
Noteworthy Articles
- The Newbie’s Guide to Detecting the NSA - Wired Blog
- Sadly, this seems to be something we need to look out for nowadays.
- People Power - Wired
- All sorts of sites are running with this idea and are giving traditional business models some very large ulcers. The next few years are going to get interesting.
- Like a Virgin - A Dissection of Space
- Another very strong article by Kellie Okai. After reading this article, you may have a hard time believing it is actually the year 2006.
- The first version of Photoshop - CreativeBits
- For nostalgia’s sake.
- P2P insurer will pay your fines if RIAA sues: $19/year! - Boing Boing
- Hilarious as much as it is genius. Sign me up!
- A Crash Course in Subversion - Developer.com
- If you do not use Subversion and you have written more than three lines of code, you should start using it yesterday. I cannot begin to count how many times source control has saved me from very a bad ending.
Humor
- McDonalds strategy game - Digg Games
- Conquer the fast food world!
- Oblivion Domino Day
- The amount of time it must have taken to pull this off blows my mind.
- Dust Art - Statesman
- It puts ‘Wash Me’ to shame.

it disturbs me to see how many new links you can come up with during a one week span. when do you ever work and socialize? i tried to do a ‘weekly links’ feature and I could not come up with more than 2 or 3 noteworthy links.

I like the WordPress plugins site, but he doesn’t have a spell check plugin. I will not quit until I find a spell check for posts and comments!
I know when PJ finds these links, between 11pm and 1am.
