The collection begins. now.

i am the proud owner of two prints signed and numbered by the artist, shepard fairey. this makes me a milimeter closer to owning real art work.
i have received mixed opinions from friends who have viewed these pieces. in general, people either love or hate his work for various reasons, mainly the low-brow, pop-art qualities, radical political references, and urban guerilla campaign incorporated into promoting the artwork. i am absolutely enamored by the way the artist extracts images and ideas from popular culture and incorporates them into his own distinct style. not to mention that i am a sucker for a bleak black, red, and white/neutral color palette.
• "ankara" (see image above, left)
a birthday gift to myself. the creative team at my company did an excursion to an unasuming little gallery, truly an oasis in the middle of the slums. shepard fairey was showcasing his recent work. we arrived four days into the show and discovered that 95% of the original pieces were sold out. The few remaining artworks were priced between $500-$2000. Luckily, the gallery was taking orders for relatively inexpensive, limited edition screen prints for the poor commoners like myself.
my boyfriend hates this piece and calls it 'evil-looking' with a 'militant turkish feel.' i agree that the image is ominous, but i was drawn to this piece because of its boldness, lack of colors, and arabic inspired typography. every graphical elements is beautiful because of its intricate details. there is beauty in ugliness and that is what i found appealing about this print.
• "bureau of public works" (see image, right)
a birthday gift. after being impressed by the gallery show, i felt inspired to do research on shepard fairey and his past work. i ended up (where everyone on the web eventually ends up) on ebay where i stumbled upon the forementioned sold-out. a bizarre layout of shapes, type, and images was reminiscent to the work of the bauhaus movement-a reference that won me over immediately. although my boyfriend was not keen toward fairey's work, to my surprise, he exclaimed that it was a great piece. he offered to purchase it for me as a birthday gift. the rest is history.

Why it is important to not fall asleep in history class.
"I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English." –george w. bush
i beg to differ. if the national anthem MUST be bound to one language, it should be sung in a native american language, not english.

my birthday = naked day
what a crazy way to ring in my 23rd birthday. gratuitous nudity everywhere!
April 5th 2006 is the annual CSS naked day.
i don't really understand it, but it sounds fun to me.
those darn web programmers are worse than college frat boys on spring break.
