My poor, helpless eggs!

President Bush vetoed a bill for stem cell research based on his belief that embryonic cells are potential life. Once again, Bush asserted his religious perspective on a decision that should have been based on scientific research. Our president conveniently made the determination for us that his faith is the only true faith. (In fact, his God is so relevant that it has a front row seat in policy making!) Too bad for those insignificant Buddhists, Muslims, and Atheists out there...

This veto is such a poor judgement that even the Republican party is torn on both sides. For example, Senator David Vitter, R-Louisiana, in support of Bush said: "Each and every one of us began as an embryo...Therefore, I firmly believe that [neither] Congress, independent researchers nor any human being should be allowed, in effect, to play God by determining that one life is more valuable than another."

However, Republican Senator Orrin Hatch a usually staunch opponent of abortion, said the bill promotes life by encouraging research. Even former first lady Nancy Reagan testified that stem cell research's potential for good outweighs any other factor.

Just for kicks, lets put Mr. Bush's thought into perspective and pretend for a moment that he is 150% right. In other words, what he is saying is that:

Every time a woman menstruates, she expels an egg. A potential life lost every month until pregnancy. (Absurd!)
Every time a man *ahem* masturbates, there goes a couple million lost lives. ha ha! (Very Absurd!)
Every time a contraceptive is used, the potential for life is thwarted. (Extremely Absurd!)
Every time a woman has an abortion, another potential life is lost. (Bingo! the underlying agenda for the veto!)

What about vasectomies or tube tying? Does this equal to the loss of potential life? And if we're on the subject of stem cell research as a form of 'playing god', why are executions still allowed? Now, there's some good 'ol hypocrisy for ya. Confusing, isn't it?

Of course, if you are a God fearing, sex fearing, science fearing, religious zealot, all of these thoughts make perfect sense.
