truly beautiful advertising

i had almost lost my faith in good responsible, advertising.
until, ironically, superbowl sunday.
amongst the superbowl's typical lineup of commercials was the black sheep of the group: Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty.

this commercial truly touched me. everything about the piece was absolutely true. It brought back memories. It even hurt.

as a girl who grew up watching statuesque blonde models in the media and seeing something completely different in the mirror, the message hit home. I hope it had the same effect for other women who saw this commercial. To create a simple piece with the intention to have it run against jessica simpson, the BK king, and sexed-up cars was truly a bold move. This is shock value at its absolute best. As a visual piece, the ad was beautiful with its fresh color palette and stark camera work. When can we see this kind of candor and quality in other advertisements? A message stripped of hype and lies that are still powerful and captivating?

it would be ideal to find a balance in advertising where social responsibility as well as success can be taken into consideration for the design firm and corporate client. hopefully, the Dove campaign will set a precedent for both industries.
