Firefox officially hits 50 million
It was bound to happen and today it officially did. Firefox has reached 50 million downloads and has reached an impressive milestone in a relatively short time. While some news outlets began what could be conceived as a smear campaign on the open source browser, Firefox downloads and user statistics just kept chugging away despite them.
The hype ended a long time ago and the excitement hasn't faded. Firefox has continued to shine through all the scrutiny and doubts which is quite an accomplishment from the small non-profit that created the product.
Congrats are in order although there is still quite a bit of work to do for them. Internet Explorer still takes up the vast majority of the browser market and with Microsoft changing direction to release Internet Explorer 7 pre-Longhorn, things might get even more challenging. Nonetheless, it's hard to argue that Firefox and the Mozilla Foundation haven't made a significant contribution to the internet already.
Keep it up guys.

A little experimental design work
I've been playing around with some experiments in form with using patterns and distortion. If was a really interesting study and I've gotten very polar views on it so far. Believe it or not, I'm sort of liking that since it means that it's drawing strong opinion on it.
Anyways, have a look at the study over at SOME RANDOM DUDE.
Enjoy.

This week's weekly link of the week. (Week 17)
I should have done this a long time ago...
My very good friend Yousuf Haq's portfolio site, Counterflo, reaks of coolness. The site is a great reflection of himself as a designer and as a person which is such a hard thing to do.
You really should check his site out and may I mention he's a free agent right now if you need any awesome design work done.

Trent Reznor open sources song
All the more reason why I have crap-loads of respect for Trent Reznor as an artist. I first saw this on nin.com and then on the Unofficial Apple Blog at this post that Reznor is releasing "The Hand That Feeds", the first single to his new album "With Teeth" in GarageBand format which allows you to edit the entire song. Because I am muscially ignorant, I refer to it as open source music. Because I have a Mac, I was able to download the file and play around with the tracks (to much failure). I really see it as a very progressive gesture give something like this to the public. I can only wonder what the RIAA thinks of this...
On the subject of "With Teeth", you can listen to the album at NIN's Offical Myspace. I'm really digging it from what I've heard so far.
Lastly, new wallpapers from the nin site. Very nice indeed.

Minor update at PJOHAW
Boy, that is an absolutely HORRIBLE acronym...
I spend a couple minutes touching up parts of the templates but it's still far from where I would like it to be. I have to keep telling myself that these things don't pay the bills...
I'm going to add/delete/edit a few more things around here just to tidy up, but I thought this was a good stopping point. Fortunately, in the process of tweaking the templates, I found a little bug in IE which I took care of. If IE7 is anything like Microsoft is saying, I'll be happy to see IE6 be out of my life and everyone else's.

A whole new internet?
If you're a web developer and you're not curious/excitied/scared about this then I don't know what will. I know I felt all of the above when I first read it and, coupled with Adobe's purchase of Macromedia, it makes me think Flash might be a step closer to being obsolete...
Really, take the time and read it.

Well, my logo adaptation that I made for Current TV made its way onto their website. Here I am in all my glory. Go to the Current TV website to check it out (make sure to press "play again" if you missed the animation I added to the logo).

This week's weekly link of the week. (Week 16)
OK, this is another horribly blatant plug on my part, but I'm going to do it anyway.
I finally got my portfolio online and while it's only showing a small part of my work, I'm still happy with it considering that it was started and completed within the span of a day.
I'll be updating the portfolio with a few extra projects in a couple weeks so stay tuned.

One day project finished
Since I'm going to get some exposure for the Current TV logo feature, I wanted to get a portfolio up. It's far from where I want it to be and it really doesn't show much of my work, but it's up and I'm satisfied for now.

I'm #2
Well, I've just jumped up to #2 on search results for 'Onori' on Google. My completely worthless mission to be the top search for my last name is within my grasp. This has got to be one of the stupidest causes I've put effort into. Ever.
Stupid or not though, at least I'm getting somewhere with it.

Big changes at CyArk.org. A whole new section of information and a bunch of Flash goodness added throughout the site.
Have a gander.

Help the RIAA sue the President
Absolutely hilarious. Downhillbattle.org is offering the domain name 'SueThePresident.com' to anyone that makes the best site to parody the accusation that the RIAA should sue the President since he "stole" music via iPod music-swapping with a While House staffer. Hilarious.
If you're a designer and have some extra time on your hands, you may want to consider giving it a shot.

This week's weekly link of the week. (Week 15)
Here's a great example of how cool Flash can be and how much cooler it is when there's a touch of nerd to it.
Fredrik Stutterheim's portfolio is just that with a great Flash interface which is running on an XML backend. Well, at least that's what he says, but I have no reason not to believe him since he's never lied to me before.
Good work and a good portfolio to show it off.

Ah ha! I've jumped up a notch!
Humorously, my half-baked declaration of Manifest Destiny seems to actually to be working. I've jumped up one notch in Google for the search word 'Onori' (my last name) to settle at the third ranked site for that particular search.
I've been making a a horribly sarcasticly big stink about this in past weeks and I'm sort of surprised that I haven't recieved any nasty comments which means most people got that I was joking (I think). But funny enough, it's working! I'm a little curious if I'll ever get to the number one spot, but I guess if I keep ranting like a complete jackass I stand at least a chance of doing so.

I'm a blog hosting machine
Just out of pure spontaneity tonight, I set up blogs for a couple of my friends since we all though it would be a pretty cool thing to have. I'm looking forward to having some very interesting things to read. :) They're still set to the default template, but at least they're live and all that extra stuff can happen later on.

New web fonts ahoy!
I ran across this little tidbit of information not too long ago...
Microsoft will be releasing a whole line of fonts with their new OS in 2006 for a more enjoyable reading process. While this won't do much for Apple users and PC users without the latest OS, with the right CSS applied to a site, they won't even notice a difference. It may not be a perfect solution, but it's been than nothing.
This article at poynter.org goes into further depth if you'd like to read on.

Photos from a week to remember
Wow, what a day...
Before I get into this day in particular, my girlfriend and I took advantage of the amazing day on Sunday by shooting some photos around the city. It was an absolutely great day from just about every angle.
I thought it would be cool to post her photos on my blog (see below) since I thought she took some really great shots. She keeps telling me she's not creative but I don't believe her. :)
And then along came today... Today my girlfriend officially became my fiance. The ring was given to her at the place where we first met and I'm still in awe of the whole experience. I'm looking forward to spending my life with the most amazing woman I've ever met. I literally could write volumes about all of this, but I really don't want to cheapen it by throwing it on my blog. This is, without a doubt a day I'll remember for the rest of my life with great happiness.

This week's weekly link of the week. (Week 14)
If you know me (which most likely is not the case), you know I'm a sucker for code-nerd/art-snob fusion. So as soon as I saw this site, it tickled my fancy in a major way.
Ornamism is another one of those algorithm-based visualizers, but this is a damned fine one. I honestly could have glared at my screen for hours looking at the cool shapes and patterns this thing made.
If you want to stare at pretty shapes and patterns, this is your site. The load-time is a little harsh due to the java-applet, but be patient - it's worth it.

I finally got the chance to shoot some photos and get them uploaded to the server. I'm not posting photos on this blog anymore due to bandwidth constraints and a desire to not have redundant posts on my two blogs. So if you're interested, have a look at my photos at SOME RANDOM DUDE dot net.

My continual battle to be #1 on Google for 'Onori' keeps being thwarted by a bunch of people claiming to have the last name of Onori that no one gives a damned about. I just noticed two new sites that bunmped me down a few more spots which is the exact opposite direction I'm supposed to be going. Honestly, these people need to find something better to do with their lives than to piss me off by having the same last name as me. There are plenty of other great last names out there to use so quit cramping my style and get your named changed already! On another note, I don't even show up on Google at all for 'PJ'. Now I don't have the time to discredit all the people showing up with PJ tonight, but mark my words, you're on my list so consider yourself warned...

I had been looking to April 3rd with a tremendous amount of anticipation just to have the Yankees rain on my parade with a 9-2 win over the Sox. I have to say, this wasn't the greatest way to start of the '05 season. It may just be the fact that I think I'm still in '04 ALCS mode because I found myself screaming at the top of my lungs on missed calls by the home plate umpire on 1-0 counts. That's not normal. After Wells balked in a run with the bases loaded, I knew it was time to move away from the TV or risk suffering a nuclear meltdown. I'm really hoping this is the last game the Sox lose this year or I'm going to have to take some sort of horse tranquilizer before each game.
