Today I was reading the NY Times online. Most days, you find the headlines filled with war, violence, dispair, and corruption. However, today, I found a headline that grabbed my attention for its humanity. Dose of Tenacity Wears Down a Horrific Disease is about former U.S. President Jimmy Carter's foundation, The Carter Center , which has led a campaign for over 20 years to help fight against a disease called Guinea worm. It is a fascinating article. It reminds me how the most basic things I take for granted, like clean water, are truly a luxury. I am very encouraged to see how Jimmy Carter has advocated for humanitarian causes and used his name to promote issues such as fighting diseases that are curable in his post-presidential years. I hope our other U.S. presidents follow Carter's example.

regarding the guinea worm, it sounds like a scene from a horror movie--to drink a glass of water and then to have a worm 'hatch' out of your flesh in a year. we take our sanitation system for granted sometimes, as well as our readily accessible vaccines. we should feel blessed to have these luxuries that the majority of the world only dream about.
Posted by: kellie at March 26, 2006 12:13 AMI really feel Jimmy Carter is an amazing man who just happens to have been President of the United States at one time. I honestly think the work he's done outside of office is just as powerful as his work in office.
If only our other Presidents would be so pro-active in helping humanity... This world would be a much better place.

Posted by: James at March 28, 2006 05:54 PMJimmy Carter has done so much as an individual to try and make the world a better place --- if only more politicians used their name and face and noteriety to do the same after leaving office
