Thoughts On a Better Some Random Dude?

August 8th, 2008

As I mentioned not too long ago, this site is in the process of being redesigned. I really did not go into any details about what to expect from the new site, so I wanted to drop a few ideas of what I am working on.

Here are a few things to you will be seeing from the new blog:

  • There will be tiered content - large scale, medium scale, small scale and (possibly) micro scale.
  • Each tier will be viewable separately or together.
  • Publishing will be decentralized with content siphoned into this blog.
  • Posts will be much more frequent because of the tiered, decentralized nature (and yes, I have been testing this to make sure it is the case).
  • Daily blog statistics/metadata will (hopefully) play a larger roll in the general experience.
  • Comment Love will play a larger roll and be more integrated into the blog.

I could get into the design and other details, but frankly that is not too important in the big scheme of things. The content is what really separates the mediocre blogs from the good ones. The way I see it, if I can make creating content excruciatingly easy, there is a much better chance that I will do it more often. Since I already do in fact “publish” a lot of content outside of this blog, I might as well take advantage of that.

But enough from me, the reason why I posted this is because I want to hear about any ideas you think would be great to see in the new SRD. Ultimately, I will only be able to do so much, but I am certainly still in the “open to new ideas” stage. I have been looking at other blogs to see how this site could improve, but at the end of the day I am only one person with limited knowledge. Please lend me your experience and thoughts. I have no doubt it will make the new blog better in the end., , , , , ,

Google Reader Has Changed My (Online) Life

March 10th, 2008

I really fail to understand how long it took me to start using Google Reader, but it is frankly changing how I consume content/information online. In the week or so I have used it, the amount of articles I have digested has taken off exponentially. I previously had a hard time regularly checking my favorite blogs as the process was cumbersome and plagued with too many steps. As usual, Google nailed the process and made something which previously was a pain into something I thoroughly enjoy.

I have noticed that I already have been commenting on my favorite blogs more frequently (which still is not enough) as well as getting ideas for new content on this blog. It is truly amazing what a good tool can do to impact your daily life., , , , , , , , ,

Hello 2008. So long 36Clicks.

January 11th, 2008

I am going to miss you 36Clicks, but you were just too high maintenance and I frankly did not have the time to deal with you. I still think the idea of a photoblog was great, I simply just do not have enough cycles to devote time to two blogs. What resulted was a half-baked photoblog that was never fully completed and less posts on this one.

So, 36Clicks will be retired and the Photograph of the Week will be coming back. The more things change, the more they stay the same…, , , , ,

My Local Photo Lab Has a Blog

July 23rd, 2007

photoworks

I have been going to Photoworks to have my film developed for the past year or so. If you live in San Francisco and take your film to get processed, I highly suggest having it done there. By pure luck, I just ran across their blog and it is full of great content and amazing work from local photographers. If you are even slightly interested in photography, it is well worth your time to go there and read some of their articles.

The Photoworks blog just once again confirms my belief in the power of blogs for small businesses. Since small business many times depends so much on local communities, a blog helps extend that community into a virtual space - making interaction and customer outreach that much easier. Photo labs (especially good ones) are becoming harder and harder to find and I would be very depressed if Photoworks was no more. I am so happy that they have decided to take this next step as I think it gives them the chance to expand their community and business.
