YouTube Video Visualization

July 30th, 2007
youtube video sampler

Not too long ago, I posted a Flash experiment where I sampled video color data to create real-time visualizations (by the way, feel free to download the base code). I have yet to really spend time on the visual treatment of this technique - instead playing with more technical aspects to expand the potential of what can be done creatively. I am truly looking forward to experiment in more interesting visual/motion treatments, but first things first...

Processing Beta Released

July 13th, 2007

papervision

Wow, two beta announcements in one week - this is most definitely a first. Processing just released its 1.0 Beta, which is quite a milestone for the visually-oriented programming language. I have always wanted to play with Processing but have not been able to find the time up to this point. I know that its performance as well as other powerful features open up the door for a myriad of possibilities which are still out of the realm of what Flash can do. One of the more notable features is the ability to export frames of code-driven animations/visualizations - allowing for image-sequence extrapolated video. There have been so many Actionscript-driven animations that I would have loved to convert to Quicktime or FLV which, up to this point, has not been possible natively within Flash.

I have seen processing allow some amazing things to be possible - I highly suggest checking it out if you have not up to this point. Meanwhile, I am trying to push myself to sit down and play with it as well.

Why Silverlight Should Fail

June 25th, 2007

silverlight

Silverlight has been quite the buzz around the internet lately. Microsoft’s new product explicitly takes aim at Flash as they try to take on the rich media arena. Up to this point, Flash has basically stood alone at the top as the rich media standard for the browser. I will explain why, from my point of view, I do not see Silverlight changing that reality any time in the near (or far) future.

Actionscript 3 Video Color Sampler Experiment

June 12th, 2007

Actionscript 3 Video Sampler

A while back I published a small Actionscript experiment that sampled colors of video and displayed a matrix of the sampled colors it retrieved. I mentioned that I would be posting a follow-up once I ported all the code to Actionscript 3 and was able to do some interesting experiments with this technique. The current color sampler can give you the rgb code, red channel, green channel, blue channel, hue, saturation and brightness. It took a bit of time, but I have made five different motion treatments generated from my color sampling engine. The port of the color sampler class to Actionscript 3 made a significant difference in terms of performance and offered many more possibilities to what I could attempt. These five experiments are really just scratching the surface of what can be done with this technique - I have already thought of 3 or 4 different methods I would like to create.
