Nine Inch Nails’ Ghosts Album is About MUCH More Than Music.

March 3rd, 2008
Nine Inch Nails Ghosts

If you have been reading this blog for even a moderate length of time, you are most likely aware of the unusually high amount of Nine Inch Nails articles on this site (seen here and here to name a few). Considering the general theme of this blog, I could see how this could be seen as strange to many. Still, I tend to write a lot about how digital media (which design-technology intersects with) is changing not only mainstream media, but the society which consumes it - which in turn impacts how we do our work. For the past two years, Nine Inch Nails has really been on the frontlines of pushing media away from the consolidated, copyright-heavy, corporate-run model to a distributed, grassroots, artist-run model.

Last night, Nine Inch Nails released Ghosts I-IV, an independently-produced album that is available for download for the price of $5. There are 36 songs in this album, so that $5 looks even more reasonable than ever. For those of you into the tangible, CDs can be purchased as well. Additionally, 9 songs are available completely for free - no questions asked. While this is distribution model is new, it is not new - we have seen it with In Rainbows and Niggy Tardust, each with their own little tweaks on it. However, make no mistake, Ghosts is unlike any other album distribution we have seen.

Do You Have a Webcam?

July 16th, 2007

I am currently setting up an online experiment in the next month or so and I need to know, 1) how many of you have a webcam, 2) how many of you would be interested in lending it for an online experiment and 3) would you be willing to get some of your friends to pitch in as well.

I became a little inspired after seeing what others have done with Flash and webcams and just completed a proof in concept. Now I need to get some help from the community in actually making this happen. Please drop a comment in this post or contact me directly if you would be willing to help out., , , , ,

GOOD Magazine Presents: Internet Porn

July 12th, 2007

Leave it to GOOD Magazine to come up with something that wreaks of this much awesomeness. We all know internet porn accounts for quite a bit of the traffic on the web, but never have the bare facts been revealed in such a provocative manner. This video is semi-suitable for work, depending on your job and its atmosphere. If you are Pat Robertson’s receptionist, I would suggest not viewing this video at the office.

If you dig that video, I can tell you from experience that GOOD has a whole lot more of that goodness in their magazine. I would normally suggest going over and buying a subscription, but I have an even better idea - get it for free. I am giving a free subscription to GOOD to the top commenter every month. You can be just like Kellie and have your own year-long subscription to GOOD just by dropping some comments. Don’t forget, comments here also spread some love as well., , , , , , , , , , , ,

FTC Against Net Neutrality - This is Getting Scary

June 29th, 2007

This issue is somewhat off topic for this site, but it is too important not to bring up. There are more and more signs that Net Neutrality is losing support in US governmental circles. Recently, there has been a very good discussion on this blog about free speech - specifically on the internet. Net Neutrality would ensure that free speech and access to information would be safeguarded for all users (at least in the US). Without Net Neutrality, large telecoms could essentially decide what users can and cannot view - the consequences of this are potentially crippling.
