The Next Hot Style - Just As Soulless As The Last One

November 26th, 2007
Useless Style

A little over a year ago, I wrote on the short-sightedness of the visual style which had been named after the technology it had been associated with - Web 2.0. As predicted, the masses have begun to tire of the current trend. Additionally, designers are beginning to write about their dissatisfaction towards the Web 2.0 visual trend and are proposing alternatives to it. As the visual style attributed Web 2.0 wains, we are inevitably going to see the rise of another all but arbitrary visual style take its place which will be adopted by the design masses without a second thought.

This Week’s Weekly Links of the Week - Week 44

March 30th, 2007

I am sort of sputtering into the end of the week. I am still slightly sick and tired as hell. This whole sick thing really rubbed off on the blog and the content kind of suffered because of it - my apologies. I will be getting an article out (a real article) next week and things should begin to get back into order. So if you will excuse me, I have to get back to feeling sorry for myself.

Enjoy the links.

Design Open Discussion - What is Your Design Style?

February 16th, 2007

The topic is fairly straight-forward. Are you more digitally or traditionally inclined? Is there a genre that your work always seems to fit in? If you do not know what style you follow (if any), explain what direction your work leans towards. Please be descriptive and explain why you think you got there to begin with. I know it is a Friday and everybody’s head is already in the weekend, but if you could, spend a couple minutes and share your thoughts - this could be a fun one., ,

DRAG-ing Your Design Down - How To Style Yourself To Anonymity

May 11th, 2006

Have you seen that site with the pretty gradients and the rounded corners with cute drop-shadows? You know, that one that looks all slick and shiny? I bet you have. The problem is, all of us are thinking of a different one. Why? Because there are, oh, about a million of them out there. I have no doubt that there will be a few of you out there that will like me even less after this article. I have pretty much accepted that.

The internet is in a bit of a design rut. We have fallen in love with a particular visual style and we just will not let it go. Everywhere you turn there is a gradient. Drop-shadows are surrounding us. We are pinned down by rounded corners. This, my friends (and soon-to-be enemies), is a perfect example of how trends can show their ugly side. I am writing this article to ask if we are interested in designing websites or just decorating them. If we are in fact interested in the former, perhaps we should think twice about we are doing.
