Done and Done
So...now I have some time to write some things down. The past two weeks have been nothing but stress, fatigue, and anxiety. Despite the physical and emotional rollercoaster I felt that I handled myself well.
I managed to have a good critique for my Industrial Design 4 class.
Things To Remember:
They agreed for a chair with better ergonomics...no complaints of material uses.
They pointed out that it takes years for chairs to be completely developed with teams of people working on the project. Steven Skov Holt pointed out that I had a target and overshot it = interpreted as good and not necessarily bad...Abbr.
"If you are to do a chair why not take it further. Instead of focusing on one part of the chair you took on the whole ball of wax. This is a bit more than a student designer should do within 4-15 weeks. Be a little more courageous and try pushing the design of the chair much further and maybe even more specific. Why not hammock's or something that people can gather around. Don't be constriand by what you already see. Just because there are rows of seat does not mean you have to make rows of seats."
Steven is a bit of a dreamer when it comes to design and the rules of physics and airline regulations. However, his words about the design will push me to go a bit further than I already had this time.
Other comments came from an aeronautical engineer/industrial designer. He told me he like where the seat was coming from. It had real great potential and if given more time could elaborate on better things concerning its constructiona and attatchment to the plane. Speaking of this, he did play hardball when it came to the physics and regulations of my chair...it would not work. Its two point attachment would just cause catastrpohic problems relusting in DOOM. Though he did give me insight to more plane features that I can work off of. > Apparently the roof/superstructure of any airplane is the sgtrongest part of the aircraft. Yet seats are fastened into the tracks that lie on the deck = possible design element to work into next time. Imagine that if chairs were suspended from the cieling and not from the ground. Craziness!
Representatives from IDEO really enjoyed some specific features of my chair. Both said that they really loved the visual language of my chair. Breaking up the wall of foam, having be slimmer, incorporating modern design, and values. This made me really happy because how I designed the form of my chair was well received. They liked what I wanted them to like and that is good. I was succesful in 80% of my design. They also enjoyed the up and down movement feature but they were not that excited about it. Yet the give and take feature of my chair was a hot topic; though I should have "explained and drawn that out more."
All in all I had a good reception of my idea, form, and function of my chair. I can say that my project was one of the best because it had a lot of factors that were accepted and that I had worked really hard on.
